National Award for All Saints Church Necton

Rossi Long Consulting are delighted to have been involved with the sensitive repair and restoration of the church tower and cupola leading to award of the prestigious 2012 SPAB (Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings) John Betjeman Memorial Award for outstanding repair and craftmanship. The church was chosen from a strong field of contenders including Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford.   The meticulous and beautifully executed repairs to the cupola at All Saints Necton caught the judges’ attention.  SPAB panel spokesman Peter Burman says: “In every case we were impressed by the high level of professionalism which had gone into the repair project. We felt that all four short-listed projects exhibited the SPAB’s principle of ‘honest and visible repair’   Thoughtful and well detailed repairs were a consistent feature of the restoration with modern materials skilfully employed in partnership with traditional craftsmanship. The underlying philosopy of minimal loss of original fabric was pushed to the limit in retaining the oak frame and curved oak braces which had suffered weathering as a result of its extreme exposure.   Stephen Thorp, Rector of All Saints, says  “…..As it progressed we could see, even as lay people, the high level of skill and craftsmanship involved. It was a joy to behold and we all appreciated the sheer quality of the work that was being done.  The project has really brought the community together …..”
